Tian Tan

Ngong Ping 360, Po Lin Monastery and the Big Buddha.
Today (well some day not too long ago) we took the afternoon and visited Tian Tan, the Big Buddha. We were meant to meet up here with an old friend who was passing through Hong Kong for seven hours on a layover back to Canada, sadly he would not be able to join us. But rest assured Scott you where there with us in spirit and the Facebook post will prove it.
Tian Tan is a huge tourist draw, I mean its a big, really big, in fact a huge buddha and in this humble traveller's opinion definitely worth a visit. While it feels more like tourism then spirituality and buddhism, the site has a few other aspects on offer as well. They (HK tourism people) have put in place the purposefully built Gong Ping 360 village. This is like a giant gift shop complete with a Starbucks and Subway restaurant. There are a couple of interpretive areas within Gong Ping 360 including "Walking with Buddha" (though I did not think it worth the $40 HKD admission) and nature centre for Lantau island. The rest is souvenirs and food stalls. The village leads up to the piazza, which by the way is a great place to let the kids run and play with bubbles.
Besides the Big Buddha, the hidden gem here is the monastery which is a little less tourist and a little more spiritual and buddhism. The Po Lin Monastery serves many monks and nuns as well as worshippers today. It is a very well kept monastery in immaculate repair. Built in the early 1900s the main hall is home to three large statues of the Buddha representing his past, present and future. If you are in this area visiting the Big Buddha do not miss Po Lin Monastery.
