Chi Lin Nunnery & Nan Lian Gardens

Hong Kong is a busy as hell, fast-paced all or nothing city; that's why finding quiet oases can be a crucially important task for those who need that little break from time to time.

Enter Chi Lin Nunnery; located next to the Nan Lian Gardens it is one of those oases that exist in Hong Kong.  A beautifully maintained  Buddhist temple complex set against the high rise towers of Honk Kong's Diamond Hill area.  The nunnery was built in 1934 as a retreat for buddhist nuns (they also new the importance of a bit of quiet time).

Spend a couple of hours strolling the grounds and the adjacent Nan Liang Gardens.  Soak up the quiet and juxtaposed scenery of temples backdropped by the rest of Hong Kong.

The adjacent Nan Lian Gardens are equally stunning and superbly well kept. Covering 3.5 hectares the garden wasn't constructed until 72 years after the Nunnery was built as a joint venture between the Nunnery and the Hong Kong government.  It is a Tang Dynasty-style garden complete with large rock sculptures, water features and a golden pagoda.
