When it's Raining in Hong Kong

Museums & Indoor Activities for Families

The weather in Hong Kong can be very hot, and sometimes very wet.  When you need a break from the heat or a place to hide from the rain there is plenty of indoor fun to be had in the city.  From excellent museums to indoor parks, there’s tons to keep your kids entertained and happy in the city.  Below is a list of some of the best museums for kids in the city.

Museum of History

While some might think a museum of history might be a bit dry for children, this one is definitely the exception. Hong Kong has done an excellent job of bringing the history of the city to life in a wonderful and engaging way.  Both adults and kids will love exploring every nook and cranny of this museum with it’s life-sized street lined with traditional historical shops and businesses; a junk boat kids can walk onto; and traditional homes, costumes and culture shown in life sized displays that are interactive, engaging and fun.

Oh – and the best part is – entrance to the museum is FREE!

LogisticsTake the MTR to Tsim Sha Tsui station and exit through Exit B2.  Go straight along Cameron Road for about 350m and turn left. Then take the crosswalk which will lead you directly to the museum.

Science Museum

Right next door to the Museum of History is the excellent science museum with 4 floors of hands on attractions for kids of all ages including over 500 science exhibits on permanent display. We spent half a day here and only explored about half of the museum.

While this museum isn’t free, the cost of entrance is incredibly low – only a fraction of what museums of it’s calibre charge in other areas of the world.  In fact it's only $20 HKD (about $2.50 USD) to enter.  if you’re living in HK or there for a while, consider getting a family seasons pass for only $100 HKD, just a nominal amount more then buying single entry tickets for a family of 4.

Super Park

What can we say? This park is super! (ok, that was lame – I couldn't help it).  Amelie loves this park so much that she begged us to have her birthday party here. The park is an indoor playground, trampoline park, climbing wall, skateboard/scooter park, and sports center all in one. They even have batting cages and a robotic soccer galie you can try to beat.

With areas for big kids and little kids there’s bound to be something everyone in your family will enjoy. From the giant slide, to the team games, a day here will not disappoint.  And, when your crew gets hungry, there’s a Calimex restaurant attached with good Mexican food that kids are bound to love.

Logistics:  The closest MTR station is Olympic Park station. When you get there follow the signs that will mark the way all the way from the MTR to the park. It's about a 10 minute walk.
